Minister Approves Funding for Five Clare Broadband Projects

The Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr. Noel Dempsey, T.D., has announced that five Clare based broadband projects have been approved funding under the County and Group Broadband Scheme. Under this particular phase the following projects in Clare have been approved: Quin, Lahinch/Liscannor, Killaloe & Ballina, South East Clare and Miltown Malbay. Nationally, a total of 38 projects have been approved to date, representing an investment of over €3m in 84 communities covering over 60,000 people. These 5 Clare projects bring state investment of €250,000 to rural Clare. In announcing approval for these projects, Minister Dempsey stated that tremendous support had been given by the County Councils and the Regional Authorities in both promoting the Scheme and assisting communities in the preparation of their applications.

The County & Group Broadband scheme is targeted at rural and low population areas that would be unlikely to get broadband services in the near future. The Director of Services with Clare County Council, Mr. Tom Coughlan, in welcoming this announcement by the Minister, stated that Broadband is the future of communications and looked forward to these and other communities in Clare having access to Broadband in the near future. He added that the availability of Broadband will lead to improved employment opportunities and create a more positive environment for investment in these areas. Through the assistance of the Community & Enterprise Department of Clare County Council, 11 applications were submitted to the Department from County Clare, to date 50% of these applications have been approved. The evaluation process in relation to the outstanding projects from Clare is currently underway with a decision expected in the next few weeks.
